Summary/Abstract: In order to fight a terrorist organization, it is crucial to identify the language used by its members and to secure a possibility of translating the materials written in it. The present article is devoted to language profiles of selected organizations designated as terrorist ones; it analyzes their linguistic situation and how it affects the translation process of intercepted materials, communication with the arrested members and, last but not least, relations among them. For some groups, a language forms an important aspect of their ideology, while others try to downplay its role in order to avoid factional divisions. The article also explains how an understanding of a group’s linguistic situation (especially that of language competence of its members) may help in identifying regions where such an organization is likely to operate.
