Summary/Abstract: Evaluating that archival material as a cultural property is recognized as an important factor of national identification, its protection is the main goal of the archival service. Work on the protection of written cultural heritage is a required job, which implies great knowledge, patience and perseverance. The duty of us, archivists in the affairs of protection, is to be worthy of the custodians of cultural treasures, to preserve its authenticity and integrity so that we can pass it to the offspring in the preserved, original form. This work is directed primarily to the preservation of material goods, very sensitive forms, archival material, which is legally entrusted to the archives for preservation. The Law on Cultural Property specifies the conditions under which technical protection measures can be implemented. Under the measures of technical protection of movable cultural goods, they are considered to be the tasks of their preservation, maintenance, way of accommodation. It is a clear goal in front of us: by different procedures to maximally slow down the natural decomposition of documents by eliminating external causes and prevent preventive dangers from fire, flood, earthquake. Inadequate space for the storage of archives, wars, bad material (paper) on which they are written, human and biological factors are only some of the causes that can lead not only to damage, but also to the permanent loss of the recorded past. The theme of the paper is the influence of possible factors on the physical state of the material, with an emphasis on the experience of the Historical Archives in Vranje, and the measures taken to prevent them.
