Summary/Abstract: University associates (junior teaching associates and scientific research associates) fall into a special category of employees in higher education. The model governing the terms of employment of university associates is significant, distinctive and interesting from a number of aspects, which certainly call for a more comprehensive consideration and analysis. The employment of university associates is an atypical employment relation; it implies an employment for a specific period of time (on a temporary basis) which is quite distinct from the regular employment regime and rather specific in terms of its formation, duration, continuation and termination, as well as in terms of its special significance for the labour law theory and practice. In this paper, the author provides an overview of the specific features governing the employment of university associates from the historical as well as from the labour law perspective. The former is aimed at providing a better understanding of the basic presumptions and legal grounds for the formation and development of this concept, and the role of university associates in the teaching process. The latter is provided for the purpose of analyzing the normative and practical characteristics or modifications of the elements constituting the general notion of an employment relation as perceived from the aspect of this category of university employees.
