Summary/Abstract: Marriage, as a legal institution, has been regulated in both the Polish family law and the Canon law of the Catholic Church. Either of these legal systems has established the institutions which may make a decision on the legal continuation of marriage. The Polish family law includes the judgement of existence or non-existence, nullity and dissolution of marriage, while the Canon law of the Catholic Church embraces an annulment and dissolution of marriage. Despite the fact that the analysis of these legal institutions reveals some similarities, however, it leads to the general conclusion that civil institutions and the institutions of the Catholic Church cannot be considered equivalently.
