Summary/Abstract: When compared to other inhabitants of Slovakia the Roma are socially and culturally distinct. This is certainly true about their demographic behaviour, in particular the age structure of the population, which can be described as a progressive type of age structure charactericstic by a high proportion of children and small proportion of elderly. One of the long-term demographers' targets is the change of demographic behaviour from demographic reproduction to demographic revolution. This process is characteristic by decrease in both mortality and birth rate. The result would be demographic ageing and the change from uncontrolled to planned number of births on the scale of family structure. Since the Romany population used to be approached as one whole, the used methods failed in grasping differences in demographic behaviour in Romany settlements with varying social and cultural standards.
