Summary/Abstract: The question arises whether the similarities in the speech development of monolingual andbilingual children are shown also in the area of vocabulary and grammatical structures of thelanguage. We have verified active and passive vocabulary and grammatical categories of theverb as the utterance constituent. Our study is based on the fully standardised version of theCDI (TEKOS II Words and sentences). We paired every bilingual child to one monolingual child on the basis of fulfillingthree criteria: (a) the same chronological (physiological) age stated in months; (b) the samesex; (c) only children, whose active vocabulary was in the range of norm according to thepercentile tables of The Test of Communicative Behaviour were chosen. Comparison of theactive and passive vocabulary shows minimal differences between both groups of children, aswell as the comparison of verbal grammatical categories points at high degree of similarity inthe quantity of used grammatical categories but also in the intrinsic structure of the producedgrammatical forms of the verb.
