Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on a Coptic term, piakou, which designates a deacon and is used exclusively in Fayyumic documents. After recalling the identification of the form with hisGreek equivalent (διάκων or διάκονος), it reviews the contexts of use and what they can reveal about the evolution of the function of deacon in early Islamic Egypt. Finally, it questions the phonological process that led from the Greek form to the Coptic Fayyumic form.
