Subjective and objective aspects of translation editing

On Slovak translation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel No Country for Old Men

Summary/Abstract: The author of the paper analyses the translation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel No Country for Old Men (2005) published in Slovak as Táto krajina nie je pre starých (2013). The analysis focuses on editing shifts made to the original translation manuscript and identifies the subjective and objective strategies in the editor’s recommended corrections. Comparison of the four texts – the original novel, the edited translation manuscript, the final Slovak translation and finally Czech translation – should bring insight into the translator – editor cooperation or rather the “fight” over the final translation. It should also state the place and the role of the editor and competences the translator has to have to defend his approach to the text.
