Summary/Abstract: This paper is dedicated to characterising the traces of Polish in a Frenchlanguage diary written by F.P. Dalairac, a confi dant of king John III Sobieski, in the late 17th century. The diary contains many interesting descriptions of mores, functioning of the society and the customs applicable mainly in Poland but also in neighbouring countries. The work records also a rich material concerning the Polish language (in particular proper names and names of the Polish realities), the linguistic characteristics of which proved that Dalairac, despite diffi culties related to the spelling and transcription of Polish words was generally compliant with the recommendations of Polish-French grammar books of that time. The diary is an interesting source for examining the old Polish-French linguistic contacts, studying the Polish language of the Middle Polish age, as well as carrying out socio-, pragma- and ethnolinguistic research.
