Summary/Abstract: Semantic derivation can be defined as a process of new concept formation. With changes in a political and social life, new types of semantic formation are activated and word meanings are extended. Already existing words can be used for the denomination of new realia. In lexicon, we increasingly meet with words that are familiar to us; however, they are used in brand new, sometimes rather unusual concepts. This phenomenon occurs not only in foreign lexicon where we speak about the so-called secondary transfer, but more increasingly even in our native lexicon. If we speak about the nature of semantic word formation, we need to have in mind its parallel with a morphological way of new word formation, which is reflected especially in the existence of model regularity whereby word formation types are created. The semantic derivation takes part in the formation of semantic neologisms. New concepts emerge, albeit to a lesser extent, even in connection with the semantic calques.
