Summary/Abstract: During the last decades a large number of studies on the effects of pubertaltiming on psychological functioning of adolescents have been published. Thisreview of the literature indicates that early maturation in girls and off-timematuration in boys are associated with problems in psychological adaptation. Themethodological causes of the inconsistency of the results in this field of study areexamined. Some of the possible directions for future research in this area areconsidered.
