Perspective of Religious Officials to Participation Banking: An Application in Bingöl Province

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this study is to contribute to the literature about the view of religious officials on participation banking. For this purpose, data was collected applyinga questionnaire to a selected group of religious officials living in Bingöl province.This data was analyzed by factor analysis. As a result of this analysis, it was decided that 15 variables should be collected at 3 factors. These factors are called participation banking preferences, transactions with participation banking, interest transactions by considering the importance orders. According to the survey results,significant differences were found among the answers given by religious officials to the questions about participation banking. Religious officials indicated that the Participation Banks could be preferred in case of a need, but that the transactions carried out were not in line with the Islamic rules and that the transactions were close to interest transactions. It is understood that participation banking, which is considered as an alternative to traditional banks, is not sufficiently known by religious officials and their perceptions on Islamic financial are weak. For this reason, it has been suggested that religious officials have been informed about participation banking and the most appropriate Islamic banking model should be formed by taking their opinions.
