Summary/Abstract: The European Union is sometimes presented as the sole goal for Turkey. In contrast, BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization have emerged as alternatives suggested for the complete abandonment of the European Union membership goal. However, if these initiatives are considered as complementary foreign policy options, rather than taken as direct alternatives to the European Union membership, they may enrich Turkish Foreign Policy. With the establishment of the New Development Bank in 2015, BRICS has begun institutionalizing, though it is still not structurally equivalent to the European Union. Therefore, “BRICST”, which may be formed with the participation of Turkey, cannot be considered as an alternative against the goal of Turkey to become a member of the European Union. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization has a significant portion of the world population. Turkey’s cooperation with the Organization may reduce its dependence to the West, however cooperation with the Organization does not mean a breach from its European Union target, on the contrary it may facilitate undertaking the historical role of building a bridge between the East and the West. Turkey may benefit the most from these policy options, when it does not consider using them against each other.
