Summary/Abstract: New communication technologies with a user-focused structure provide users a two-way communication opportunity. That medium which is known as social media is seen as an important means of bringing people and the masses together. This situation has important functions such as communicating with the target group and recognizing the masses when considering the institutions. Web 2.0-based social networks as a new communication technology, function as a means for new public relations. It is wondered about their advantages to people and to institutions as a new comunication tool. The aim of this research is to investigate institutions if they are using Twitter effectively which functions as a public relation tool. Airline companies have been dealt with on this subject and the top five companies in the world have been examined as a sample. This study is important in terms of emphasizing the importance of social media, which is seen as a new medium of relations with the public, in terms of institutions and expressing its advantages. This tool which is not costly and also facilitates reaching thousands of target groups, has been subjected to content analysis by categorizing over samplings of airline companies.
