Comparative Analysis of Cattle Breeding in Turkey with Countries of EU

Summary/Abstract: Cattle breeding is a widespread economic sector that can be seen in every regions of Turkey. Beside its positive effects on employment, gross domestic product and security of food supply, this sector is important also for being one of the main sources of rural living. Additionally, the sector's competitiveness gains more importance day by day with the influence of globalization. This survey was carried out to compare the economic development during the period of 2000-2016 of the cattle breeding sector in Turkey with the countries of European Union and to make suggestions for giving acceleration to the development of the sector. In study, number of cattle, production quantity and producer price of milk, meat and feed, amount of meat and milk production per animal and the amount of feed obtained from the unit area were used as indicators. The analysis was carried out by comparing the changes in these indicators over the years with those of the data of countries of the European Union. The data used in the study were derived from the Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations. The results revealed out that cattle breeding sector in Turkey have not yet reached a competitive level. High producer price of meat, milk and forage plants, prevalence of small scale enterprises, lack of irrigable land and, most importantly, avoidance of young and educated population from the sector are the main reasons of this result.
