The Evaluation of The Rural Tourism Potential with SWOT Analysis: The Case of Yozgat

Summary/Abstract: Rural development is a process based on reducing economic, social and culturel development disparities between cities and rural areas by improving the welfare of people living in rural areas. In rural areas agricultural development alone is not enough tourism is considered as an alternative development tool in these areas where there is no industrial production. Rural tourism is a type of tourism made in residential areas where migration and economic problems are experienced and population density is low. The aim of this study is to give suggestions for development of rural tourism by making Province of Yozgat rural tourism SWOT analysis. In this study, potential areas for rural tourism in Province of Yozgat and potential rural tourism varieties are discussed. In this study data were gathered on the basis of bilateral talks with managers and experts, who are influential persons in development of tourism in the province, working in the public and private sectors. SWOT analysis was applied to collected data. According to SWOT analysis results strengths of Yozgat province rural tourism are thermal facilities in Province of Yozgat, cultural, historical and natural beatuies. Weakness are tourism awareness has not been sufficiently developed due to lack of promotional activities, lack of cooperation between institutions on tourism and number of existing facilities is insufficient. Oppurtunities are a constant increase in the interest of rural tourism, low industrial production areas throughout the province and supports provided by the government to rural tourism. Threats are unplanned urbanization disrupts the natural structure of the province and local people are not well informed about the preservation of natural areas, historical and cultural assets. This study is thought to be a guide for entrepreneurs who will invest in rural tourism in Province of Yozgat and researchers who will work on this subject in future.
