Summary/Abstract: This essay on the American "civil religion" was written before the US presidential election. At the request of the Transit editors, after the election, I added two short sections (6th and 7th) to the symbolic politics and "philosophy" of Bill Clinton. Above all, they are meant to be an illustration of some of my theses, but of course they can not replace an exact analysis of the "Clinton phenomenon." (OK.)
