Summary/Abstract: Anne Hébert is a Québecois author whose literary career spans over the second half of the 20th century. Her first poetic work appeared in 1942 and the last published poems date from 1992. The aim of this study is to analyze the evolution of the imagery of the bird that constantly reappears in Hébert’s poetry. The image stands for both, literary work of art, as well as for freedom. These two aspects are intertwined and other images (heart, lamp, hands) concur to create a complex web of relations. This complexity permits the author to explore the question of freedom from various vantage points.
