Summary/Abstract: This essay deals with the concepts of national and universal culture by comparing the schemata of empirical social sciences research with the Kantian approach, as a more illuminist and individualist perspective. The culture as a national concept borrows from the universal modern culture characterized by diversity and the dynamism of a continual change. Through being opened from within, such a culture is opened to the outside world as well. This brings to the idea of a universal culture. For example, the national culture comprises the work of foreign authors translated in the language of that culture and the national literature of a country should comprise translated master pieces. The author of this essay is critical to an ethnicist conception of culture.
