THE ASSESMENT OF THE FUNCTION OF PICTOGRAMS FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE HISTORY TO THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD

Summary/Abstract: Pictograms are one of the visual marks facilitating users for communicating with each other from different cultures. It has an ability to transform any message into a common language thanks to visualize in a simple way. While the origin of pictograms are down to the date of the first writing systems, pictograms received the field of study as a result of the improvements of the 20th century. The fundamental function is to transmit the concept or situation to the user regardless of the spoken language. In this paper, the role of the pictograms in written language and the transition of today’s world will be examined. Furthermore the contribution of the semiology to today’s pictograms and the legibility will be discussed.
