TRADITION AND INTERTEXTUALITY IN RYUNOSUKE AKUTAGAWA'S WORKS

Summary/Abstract: Many researchers of Ryunosuke Akutagawa's works lay emphasis on the fact that his poetics was greatly determined by the influences of the European literature. However, Akutagawa certainly was one of few Japanese modern writters who, besides searching for literary ideals in the West, stayed firmly with the literary heritage of his own country. Akutagawa clearly expressed his opinion that the act of artistic creation cannot be completely new and original, however talented the author himself may be, since in every single piece of work there are the reverberations from other literary texts. Thus, in the short-story „Cogwheels” we can find a web made of the various citations referring to different texts, mostly to those of the European literature, which take part in the creation of the new sense specific to this Akutagawa’s work. The researchers, however, were rather apt to neglect the significance of Japan’s literary heritage in his opus. Besides the prototexts originating from the anthology of short-stories Kowaku monogatari, which appear mostly during Akuatgawa’s first developing phase, he also was inspirated by a rude, but fresh and vital narrative technique of this ancient work. With the example of Kowaku monogatari we tried to analyze the role of the classic Japanese literature in the works of Ryunosuke Akutagawa.
