Summary/Abstract: The focus of this study concerns the specific manner in which Slobodan Selenic adapts certain passages from Rebecca West’s travelogue Black Lamb and Grey Falcon for use in his novel Očevi i oci. Norris considers their intertextual function within the broader theme of the conflict between Balkan and non-Balkan civilizations; a theme generally characteristic of Selenic’s literary opus. In Očevi i oci we find the voice of Rebecca West distributed amongst the characters of the novel, her words invested with new meanings as they are articulated by Stevan Medakovic, his wife Elizabeta, and the British diplomat Patrick Walker. Selenic’s story of a family tragedy is, thus, transformed through this intertextual contact into a universe of cultural misunderstanding. The characters cannot escape the worlds from which they originate and they all, consciously or covertly, contribute to the further circulation of the myths which divide people and nations.
