STANISLAV KRAKOV’S MEMOIRS ŽIVOT ČOVEKA SA BALKANA (LIFE OF A MAN FROM THE BALKANS)

Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the relation between Stanislav Krakov’s memoirs Život Čoveka sa Balkana (Life of a Man from the Balkans) and his avantgarde literary works. Although the avantgarde prose differs from the memoirs in the structural sense (short, dynamic form shaped by the cuts and montage technique) and in the semantic colour of the text (reminiscences are ironized and parodied in the fictional prose) from the me- moire epicness and intentions to talk about the tragic and heroic destiny of the individual in the historical whirlpool. In the thematic sense, these two planes of narration show a strangely great closeness. The fact that they are parts of the novel for which the critics claim that the most impressive events are precisely those we find in the almost unchanged shape in the memoirs places the plane of the experienced and the fictional in an intriguing mutual relation.
