EUROPEAN TRADITION: PORCELAIN DOLL

Summary/Abstract: This article investigates the history, production techniques and present condition of porcelain dolls that were produced in some porcelain factories especially functioning in Germany with the Industrial Revolution. The reason for keeping these dolls limited to Germany is their structure and variety that had traditionalized there. In addition to this; Germany has been involved among the important names of the European Porcelain industry from past to present. In literature, China is depicted as the ancestor of porcelain material. Porcelain industry rapidly developed in Europe with the industrial revolution, which resulted in having quality and special productions. Being among these productions; porcelain dolls were primarily produced for the children of wealthy families and then became mannequins dressed up by famous fashion designers as from the 1900s. Porcelain dolls are among important pieces of today's antique collectors as they not only reflect the social culture of that era, but also had been produced in a limited number with seal. These dolls that are sold at high prices in auctions have the quality of antique artworks. Modern porcelain dolls are still produced in many countries of the world like Hungary, France, Germany, Repuclic of Czech, Slovakia and Italy.
