Migrants from the former Yugoslavia in the Netherlands

Summary/Abstract: There are 76 thousand of migrants originating from the former Yugoslavia in the Netherlands today. They present one of the smaller non-native ethnic groups in this country. Based on migration period, they can be divided in two groups – migrants from the 60’s en 70’s (“old generation”) en migrants from the 90’s of the last century (“new generation”). These two groups differ from each other in educational structure, earnings, integration processes etc. Demographical, economical, social and cultural parameters of the immigrants from the former Yugoslavia are often closer to those of the autochthonous population then those related to the other allochthonous groups - they are one of the best integrated immigrant groups in the Netherlands. This paper deals with number, spatial distribution and history of migrations, gender, age, educational, confessional, employment and earnings structure, as well as criminal, integration and chances of return of this immigrant group to the country of origin.
