Summary/Abstract: The article presents the results of doctoral research which investigated the reading ability of candidates taking the certification exam in Polish as a foreign language at the B2 level in the years 2005–2008. The first part of the analysis was concerned with texts, testing techniques and whole tests used in the exam at the B2 level. The Polish corpus was compared with analogous reading comprehension tests in English and Italian. The comparative study of the reading papers showed both similarities between the tests and solutions specific to each exam. A crucial part of the research was a quantitative analysis of answers given by the candidates in part C of the Polish exam; selected tasks were also tested in a control group comprised of Polish secondary school students. The research showed that two types of test items: true/false/not stated and matching information had appeared relatively difficult for the test takers. The candidates had also difficulty understanding text structure of more complex texts.
