Summary/Abstract: Not only is Ivan V. Lalic one of the foremost Serbian poets of the twentieth century, but his name is a famous one among our translators as well. Although his poetical work can be read afresh in the light of his translation experience, this relationship between Lalic’s poetics proper and his poetics of translation has not been the topic of scientific papers to date. The aim of this paper is to indicate the special interdependence between the two creative currents, with regard to Lalic’s most important translations (P. J. Jouve, Ch. Baudelaire, F. Petrarca, F. Holderlin, W. Whitman, T. S. Eliot, G. Benn, G. Heim). Thus, numerous aspects of his poetical works, such as the eclecticism in his approach to dominant poetical movements and multifunctionality of form, are easier to apprehend and operate with when considered in connection with his translation techniques and style.
