Summary/Abstract: Josef Dobrovský was among the first thinkers who systematically studied the issue of Slovakia and tried to define the notions of “a Slovak” and “Slovakia”. He considered Czech and Slovak two (almost identical) variants of one language and therefore did not consent to Slovak being constituted as an independent national language. Nevertheless, he was truly interesed in Slovak language, history and ethnology (he cooperated and held correspondence with many Slovak scientists and writers, with J. Ribay, B. Tablic, J. Palkovič and others). Dobrovsky´s studies on the Slovak language, literature and history and on Czech-Slovak relations inspired several generations of younger thinkers. His ideas still play a positive role in upholding the Czech-Slovak cooperation.
