Summary/Abstract: The incorruptible, undecayed body of a saint is especially characteristic of the Russian tradition, whereas in Greek tradition the incorruptibility may be treated rather as a sign of sinfulness. The fi rst Russian saints with incorruptible body were Scandinavians (Varangians) by origin. It is remarkable because the fi rst Scandinavian saints were incorrupt as well. The incorruptibility as a sign of sainthood unites Russians and Scandinavians. The goal of the article is to demonstrate the similarity between these two traditions. This similarity can be explained either typologically or as a result of cultural contacts. In the present paper the author attempts to solve this problem.
