Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with Dragiša Živković’s research on beginning of Serbian literary criticism (1817-1860) with intention to demonstrate the values of his researching results for analysing development of Serbian drama and theatre in the first half of XIX century. The author emphasise the change of paradigm in understanding importance that theatre and drama have for establishing the national identity comparing that process with changing in concept that was brought to Serbian culture from European romanticism, literary theory and aesthetics which was defined in Živković’s research.
