Summary/Abstract: The film recordings made by Rastko Petrović in America in the 1930’s, which are kept in the Archive of the Yugoslav Cinema and the National Museum in Belgrade, are interpreted in the light of European poetics of avant-garde film as well as within the writer’s unique poetics. Thematically and compositionally they leave an impression of a filmed travelogue but in the deeper layer of reading they are identified as an expression of Petrović’s avant-garde identity and a vivified artistic project of his aesthetics of the too real. Rastko’s interest in photography and film are quite in accordance with the spirit of time and artistic tendencies of that age, while his knowledge of those tendencies is immanent to his intermediality and creative universality. Using the film expression the artist seeks internal connections which hold together all the elements of the writer’s poetics and make it homogenous. In Rastko’s case, the film united the fundamental nature of surreal world of folk literature, the ultimate visualization of the truth, the fascination with body and movement, the significance of the iconically religious, the deduced thematics of an ordinary man in an ordinary setting, the cubistic play with plans and perspectives, and the over-valued world of a new, different and eternal reality, super-reality.
