Summary/Abstract: The catering industry of Cluj/Kolozsvár started a sweeping development in the 1870s with the many newly established restaurants, cofee and pastry shops as well as hotels, which lasted during the entire dualist era. On the basis of the articles published in the “Magyar Polgár” (“Hungarian Citizen”) founded by Miklós K. Papp, this paper provides an insight into the life of the city’s coffee shops, restaurants and hotels. The local characteristics of catering, with its charity evenings, billiard exhibitions, pastry products and other special features, also reflect the opportunities provided to tourism by this city. Institutionalized leisure only included in this period the skating and the chess associatation, presented along with the city’s beach, the Diana Bath.
