Summary/Abstract: The subject of this work presents the analysis of the nature and functions in The Prague Cemetery by Umberto Eco, according to the following aspects: 1. metatextuality, narrative perspective and temporal dimension of the novel, 2. the general relations between historical data and fiction 3. interference of different historical circumstances; 4. various relations between intertextual aspects, history and fiction; 5. The figure of the devil. On the one hand, Eco creates new postmodern reality, and on the other - establishes a critical attitude of demystification in uncovering the process of creating a historical illusion. In the construction and deconstruction of history and fiction, The Prague Cemetery implies understanding of the nature of deception, but also searches for the truth about the issues of individual and historical identities.
