Summary/Abstract: Ferenc Gyurcsány is undeniably the most impressive politician of democratic Hungary thus far, who started out with exceptional opportunities in an exceptional situation. His first decisions have been controversial, however, and instead of the expected well thought-out reforms his measures have reflected rashness and false priorities. If he does not overreach, if he is willing to learn from his mistakes, if he takes occasionally sharp or even unjust criticisms as a basis for reflection (unlike Viktor Orbán, who tends to regard them as manifestations of a sinister conspiracy), if he listens to honest and inconvenient advice as well, if he retains his communication skills and fundamental intellectual curiosity, and if he does not focus only on the next elections but on the next generations as well, then, and only then, may he enter Hungarian history as a statesman. Currently, as the author of this article observes, the question marks still loom large.
