Summary/Abstract: This paper analyses the individual lexis (occasionalisms and potential words) of Voja Čolanović (1922-2014) in his novel Ode to the Lesser Evil (2011) with the aim of pointing out the value and significance of a writer, a language creator, in terms of enriching the lexical corpus of the Serbian language. Within a very lavish lexis in the novel, we have noticed the occasionalisms and potential words and, from the excerpts, we have taken them out and explained them. In the study itself these words have been analysed from the aspect of word formation and significance as well as their expressiveness and fun- ctio nality based on contextu al needs and styli stic reasons. A spe cial emp hasis has been put on the issue of ’usuality’, i.e. the possibility of integrating the potential words (indi- vidualisms) into the basic lexical corpus pointing out, at the same time, the role of writers, language creators, in enriching the lexical corpus of the Serbian language. The language innovation is indicated as an inevitable element of the linguistic and stylistic skills and (auto)poetic demands of the creator himself, which are on a consistent and artistically relevant level applied in the novel Ode to the Lesser Evil. It is particularly accentuated that there is a need in lexicology to pay more attention to the study of the individual lexis of the writers who are prone to the language innovation, both individually and within a certain literary epoch the writers belong to.
