Summary/Abstract: The paper opens with an analysis of the concept of skaz - a narrative form that is present in the novel Kad su cvetale tikve. Our analysis will show that skaz and the novel’s hero are interconnected by the same unmodernity, and that skaz, by the use of oral form, indicates an epic framework for the analysis of the character of Ljuba Sretenović. The imaginary world of Mihailović’s novel is marked by an epic disappearing world, which at the same time preserves the symbolic superiority over modernity. The key role in Mi- hailović’s treatment of the epic world is irony. It overrides the simple binary opposition between the epic and the modern, which in terms anticipates the ambivalent position of Ljuba Sretenović. He thus becomes a hero of an interspace between the epic and the modern world.
