Summary/Abstract: Handicrafts are one of the most important elements that transfer national culture to the future generations and distinguish nations from each other. Handicrafts play a major role in reflecting nations’ traditions, customs and lifestyles. Therefore nations attaches great importance to the handicrafts and embraces it as the cultural treasure of the past to the future and try to enrich, protect and enhance. Our country has a great diversity in handicrafts and significant production volume (Yazıcıoğlu ve Tezel, 1997, s.1). Rugs take an important place in handicrafts in our country and Hakkari is one of the cities that produce rugs. In Hakkari the rug patterns are influenced by the nature. The natives who weave carpet use motives they named after the certain signs from nature, figures they imagine, fears they can not verbalize, joys and sorrows. Today rug weaving is in general done for artistic purposes and tourism. People can make money from rug weaving. Nowadays decoration trends tend to be orientalist as a result rugs and similar weaving techniques are used as beams, sofa covers, door or curtain coating, pillows, mattresses an deven car seat covers. Rugs should be focused on for being both a local folkloric symbol and an important resource of income for Hakkari. Allowing more Hakkari Rugs in both domestic and international fairs, exhibitions and expanding product range will contribute the advencement help Hakkari Carpet Industry.
