The “Palaver Post” Table company

Summary/Abstract: Between the two World Wars, the representative space of the New York Hotel's café in Kolozsvár/Cluj has become the center of the city's cultural elite, with an effervescent literary and press life. It was also the space of the famous “Palaver Post”, the table company of writers and journalists. Its ironic named stemmed from a wordplay on the famous “Dunaposta” (“Danubian Post”) news agency of Budapest, which has become here “Dumaposta”. Its president was the solicitor Jenő Neumann, and one of the most noted members was none other than Gábor Gaál, editor-in-chief of the “Korunk”. This intellectual circle consisted initially of leftist intellectuals, but has later become much more diversified, including – among representatives of many other professional groups – journal editors, writers and physicians of different persuasions (bourgeois radicals, conservatives, liberals, social democrats, communists, Zionists etc.). This article contains the names and the most significant personal data of the participants, including Edgár Balogh, Oszkár Bárd, Gyula Csehi, Tibor Déry, Jenő Dsida, Benő Karácsony, Károly Kós, Miklós Krenner, Ernő Ligeti, József Méliusz, György Szántó, Jenő Szentimrei.
