Summary/Abstract: Migration is one of the oldest facts of the mankind history. Therefore, the migration has been a reality that has deeply affected the life of the human communities. The migrations are categorised in different ways depending on the place, the number of the people who particaped in or the factors that lead to the migration. The fact of migration had lead to some important political and social changes fort he Ototman Empire since the 18th centıry. The migration which took place in the 18th century and speeded up in the 19th century generally took place from the West to the East, the Caucasia and the Rumeli to the Anatolia. The subject of these migraitona that happened in the 19th century had been nearly the Muslims. The eastern Black Sea was deeply affected by these migrations which became a massive character especially in the second half of the 19th century socially, politically, culturally and economically. Paralell to this, the region was exposed to different social mobilites compared to the previous periods. Besides that, the epidemic diseases that occurred in the 19th century, the migrations were also a factor affecting the demographic structure of the region. Especially, the important role of the port towns such as Samsun and Trabzon, on the eastern Black Sea for the permanent and the temporary settlement of the migrants led to some mobilities in the social structures of both towns. The purpose of this study is to deal with and to evaluate the migration of 1864, which became more massive gaining impetus from the winter of 1863-64 onwards as far as it is mentioned in the travelogues of the American missionary Lennep and the German traveller Lerchenfeld-Schweiger, and thereby to explain what sort of effects the migration of 1864 had upon the social structure of both towns and to make some contributions to the enlightenment of the history of the region from the point of view of both travellers.
