THE IMPACT OF GUSTAV KLIMT ON CONTEMPORARY FASHION

Summary/Abstract: In this study, the relation between art and fashion was evaluated by examining the visual and aesthetic effects of design elements of the Austrian painter Gustav Klimt’s works, a famous artist of Art Nouveau movement (1890-1910). In order to provide a basis to this study, Klimt’s works of which inspired fashion designers such as “Tree of Life”, ''Adele Bloch Bauer I'', ''Portrait of Emilie Flöge'', ''Sunflower'', ''Medicine'' and "Kiss" were studied. The reflections to the fashion products of the design elements seen in these works such as the pattern, shape and color were shown. The aim of the study is to display an approach to the effect of the art on fashion design in the axis of Klimt’s works mentioned above. Therefore, Klimt effects in fashion collections which took place between 2007 and 2017 were examined. It has been found that Klimt inspirations are effective in a wide range of fashion products. The products are used in all fashion seasons (spring/summer and autumn/winter) in both Haute Couture and ready-to-wear collections. Thus, it has been shown that Klimt's style and perspective of his works are matched with fashion design in terms of visual items. It can be predicted that Klimt’s works are applicable to fashion designs and these works will continue to be a source of inspiration for fashion designers.
