Summary/Abstract: The article presents the first part of the results of the research on the language of the translation of Hesychian Interpretations of Ps 1:1–76:21 in czar Ivan Alexander's Pesnivets from 1337, Sofia, BAN 2 (Sofia Psalter). The results from the research on the grammatical archaisms in the Interpretations show a clear domination of Cyrillo-Methodian grammatical characteristics over those attributed to the Preslav tradition. The translation was made at the end of the 9th c., most likely by a translator trained in the Methodian tradition, but it cannot be determined with certainty where the translation was made. It is possible that the interpretations were translated in Pliska, Preslav or Ohrid. The idiolect of the man of letters and translator contains some specific characteristics that are typical of South-West Bulgarian dialects. This, however, does not necessarily mean that the translation comes from this area. It is just a marker which, with the additional help of comparative research on translations attributable to Old Bulgarian men of letters, could be used to identify the translator. The article is the beginning of future linguistic research activities that will undoubtedly follow once the edition of John Alexander's Pesnivets is completed.
