Summary/Abstract: In his works, Nabokov combines fiction with the truth of his memories and raises philosophical questions about the identity of the writer. His novels are a metaphysical game, thus it is necessary to consider status of the author, narrator and readers and to go beyond the reality of the artwork, asking about the source of inspiration. Considerations mentioned above, which are echoes of gnostic reflections and contain criticism of psychoanalysis, build the axis of Nabokov's works. The purpose of this paper is to discuss these issues in relation to selected works and to confront the vision of reality outlined by Nabokov with the Freudian vision, and, within this context, discuss the issue of the artist's identity.
