Summary/Abstract: The Celebration of the Centenary of the Romanian Union of 1918 is both a challenge and an opportunity for the Romanian historians. The paper outlines the imperative that historians should be aware of both the context and the implications of their taking part in the various forms of public commemoration. It also highlights the major divides between the competing narratives and visions regarding the Union of 1918, and emphasizes the social responsibility of professional historians both towards the historical truth and towards the contemporary society in search for values, meaning, and sense of belonging.
