Vocation sive Electio? A Rationalist Approach of the Chosen People Issue, at Baruch Spinoza (Treatise on Theology and Politics, Chap. III - De Hebraeorum vocatione. Et an Donum Propheticum Hebraeis peculiare fuerit)

Summary/Abstract: The terms „covenant” and „chosen people” are among the most widely discussed notions when it comes to the well-known monotheistic doctrine from Hebrew Bible. According to the traditional view, God established an everlasting covenant with the people of Israel at Mount Sinai and made them His chosen people (am hanivar). However, seventeenth-century philosopher Baruch Spinoza, in one of his most controversial work, Tractatus theologico-politicus (anonymously published in 1670), promotes a different way of interpreting the Scripture. In the third chapter of his Treatise, Spinoza calls into question the validity of Israel’s chosenness. The present paper aims to offer a translation from Latin into Romanian of the chapter already mentioned. It is worth noting that the translation follows the edition of the original Latin text prepared by Carl Gebhardt (Heidelberg, 1925). Also, it must be emphasized that this translation is part of a wider paper - Vocation sive electio? On the chosen people in Theological-Political Treatise. Translation and interpretation – whose purpose was to analyse the problem of the chosen people of Israel from Spinoza’s perspective.
