Summary/Abstract: The strategy of the dynamic socio-economic development implemented after 1971 covered, among others, the development of residential building industry in Opole Voivodeship. It entailed the growing use of the large prefabricated concrete block (‘panelak’) technology and the launching of the so-called housing factories. In the course of time the crisis in the building industry grew and it manifested itself particularly in the lack of resources for the completion of the vital investments. These problems adversely affected particularly the implementation of the ambitious programme to rebuild the capital of the Voivodeship. In the 1970s the administrative division of the country underwent an abrupt change, introducing – among others – the commune (municipality) system and performing a partial restructuring of the economy system. These changes, apart from some positive results, had – nevertheless – a whole range of negative aftereffects for the economy. The idea of the collectivisation of agriculture was taken up with renewed vigour, with special regard to the development of agricultural production cooperatives. There were also attempts at imposing communist ideological principles upon other aspects of social life. Meanwhile, in the mid-1970s, there was an abrupt aggravation of the crisis on the market of food commodities. An attempt undertaken in June 1976 to introduce the price increase sparked a wave of social protests, which covered Opole Voivodeship as well. The instant revocation of the price increase by the authorities was a telling confirmation of the fiasco of the strategy aiming at the sovietisation of social life in return for the material prosperity of the population
