Summary/Abstract: Armenian Catholics were recognized as a separate community by Sultan Mahmut II in 1830. When they were recognized as a separate community, Armenian Catholics obtained certain rights. They built their administrative and religious organizations as part of these rights. Through direct intervention, the Pope tried to gain influence over the Armenian Catholics, as well as other Catholic community in the Ottoman Lands. Âli Pasha and Kastro Bey did not remain indifferent to the situation the Armenian Catholics were in and wrote a pleading each. This pleadings provide important information on the formation of the Armenian Catholic community, the conflicts in the community and the Pope’s intervention in the affairs of the Armenian Catholics. In this study, pleadings by Ali Pasha and Kastro Bey is transcribed and studied in terms of material and content.
