The Impact of Social Security on Poverty Reduction

Summary/Abstract: Poverty is a phenomenon which, besides the lack of income, is accompanied by many other negative effects – social and criminal problems, a decrease in aggregate demand, isolation of paupers from society, etc. A key approach for its reduction is the redistribution of available financial resources, which is realized by the social security system in significant scope. Providing monetary support to the disabled, protects them from poverty to some degree, which increases their opportunities to participate in the economic growth and to receive adequate benefits. The analyses show that, in our country, social payments decrease the level of poverty (measured on the level of households) by about 32%. The most significant are pension payments.
