Summary/Abstract: The study analyzes in comparative terms Franz Brentano’s theory of the four phases of philosophy and its relationship to Auguste Comte’s view of the three main states of human thought both in genetic and in content-related regard. From the first point of view it argues that Brentano designs his theory independently from Comte. From the second viewpoint it provides a complex, many-layered picture of the relations between the two thinkers
