Translating the Infinitive and Infinitival Constructions

Summary/Abstract: This article focuses on the features of the infinitive and infinitival constructions and presents the ways they are translated from English into Lithuanian. The paper also attempts to investigate the techniques of rendering grammatical meanings from the SL into the TL. It is assigned to provide a brief literal review of the infinitive and infinitival constructions, to analyse them in a detailed way by presenting reliable instances from fiction literature. The work highlights that, even though grammatical categories might seem to be identical in both languages, however, they differ in their functions and the extent of lexical items. The difficulties that translators might encounter while rendering the infinitive and infinitival constructions (from English into Lithuanian), could be the fact that they have different forms and functions in a sentence. Thus, we can claim that translation of the English infinitive and infinitival constructions is greatly predetermined by their form and sometimes by their function in the sentence. Therefore, it is important for the translators to be circumspect and avoid violating the norms of the target language.
