Summary/Abstract: Formation of orchestra in the Russian symphonic school can be characterized as an intensive one. By contrast extensivity is a significant feature of the Western orchestral tradition observed in the given historical period. The components of a dialectical pair intensivity extensivity mean, correspondingly, the further principles: 1) active usage of basic resources being exploited inside a certain system; 2) the system’s enlargement due to involvement of new resources. The results of the current research help to form definite conceptual coordinates which are indispensable for a deep studying of the individual orchestral traditions of the XIX–XX centuries’ composers.
